The Creator's Mind

How to bring something new into the world, and keep doing it.

Somewhere in your life there's a thing you'd like to make: a song, a book, a business, a garden, a better way of doing something at work. This book shows where new ideas actually come from, how to generate many and choose well, how to make rough versions and improve them, how to judge and cut, how to finish, and how to keep going through blocks and long middles. It treats creativity as ordinary and learnable: you find the work by making it.

The Creator's Mind cover, with invented creatures drawn from a world's principles rather than from familiar animals

Create · 07 · One idea, drawn twice

Every chapter draws a maker's work twice

First as the maker first understood it, then as the work really came together. Here's the pair from Chapter 3, Made of Old Things.

16 seconds · the first drawing, then the redrawingA novelist's invented creatures: familiar animals with new surfaces, redrawn from what the world itself demands.

The method

Every chapter draws one maker's situation twice

First as the maker first understood it: talent as a gap, the first idea as the only one, every flaw a reason to keep polishing. Then again as it really is: where the idea came from, what the work needed, and what changed when they made it differently.

The gap between the two drawings is the lesson. Each chapter then shows how working makers handle the same moment in their studios, kitchens, labs and editing rooms, where the idea misleads, and ends with an experiment to try on your own work.

  • 32chapters, each built around one maker
  • 64diagrams in one consistent grammar
  • 3interludes: Darwin's notebooks, a film studio's Braintrust and the editor's cut
  • 40sources, every one checked, with a note on how strong the evidence is

Six parts

Create · 07.101 – 07.132
  1. Part IWhere Ideas Come FromChapters 1–5Why creativity is ordinary, what makes work new and useful, how new things are built from old ones, strange pairings, and the trap of the first example.
  2. Part IIGeneratingChapters 6–10Why quantity breeds quality, thinking alone before thinking together, the useful wall of a constraint, stepping away, and getting distance.
  3. Part IIIMakingChapters 11–16The bad first draft, many versions at once, getting good through the right kind of practice, flow, small wins, and deciding when it's done.
  4. Part IVJudging and RefiningChapters 17–22Judging your own ideas, the bias against the new, critique that helps, real revision, taking something away, and copying to learn.
  5. Part VThe Creative LifeChapters 23–27Making for its own sake, blocks, believing you can, two kinds of makers, and the hot streaks that follow wide exploration.
  6. Part VICreating With Others and the WorldChapters 28–32Old friends and new faces, outsiders, building on each other, making with machines, and the creator's mind as a practice.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants to make things, or make more of them: in art, work, science, teaching, a business or a kitchen. It won't tell you you're secretly a genius, and it won't romanticize suffering. Examples involve money, work and health; they illustrate reasoning and are not professional advice.
