The Life Design Workbook

Design a life on purpose, one page at a time.

Your evenings, your money, your people, the job you keep meaning to change. This workbook gives you a short, repeatable way to shape a life on purpose: write down what you're living for, count your real hours and money, sketch three lives and test one cheaply, change your days and rooms rather than your resolutions, share the design with the people in it, and review it on a date. Every unit ends with a page to fill in for your own life.

Integrate · 08 · One idea, drawn twice

Draw it as it feels, then as it works

The workbook uses the same grammar as the book: a life as it's lived on defaults, then redrawn around what it's for. Here's a pair from the book, Chapter 3 of The Designed Life.

16 seconds · the first drawing, then the redrawingA caseworker's move to a calm job: one scale from bad days to good, redrawn as two scales met by different parts of the week.

The method: design the life

  1. What am I living for, in my own words?
  2. What are my real constraints: time, money, energy, other people?
  3. What are three ways my life could go, and how could I test one cheaply?
  4. What would I have to change in my days and surroundings, not just my intentions?
  5. Who is this life with, and what do I owe them and they me?
  6. When will I review it, and what will I look at?

How architects design for living

Every unit has an architect's view: how people who design homes that others will live in for decades handle the same moment, and what transfers to a life. Then three field cases, a newly retired couple with every day free, a bank manager whose branch is closing and a single mother caring for her own mother while working nights, and the Life Architecture Toolkit: the Life Canvas, Hours Ledger, Three Lives, Weekly Check and Annual Review.

It won't ask you to find your one passion. It treats the limits of a real life as part of the design.

Where it fits

The workbook is the entry to the Integrate stage, the last of the eight; the book, The Designed Life, goes deeper, and you can get both as a set for €39.
